Our Favourite Christmas Reads
MERRY CHRISTMAS
‘Tis the season to be jolly. Jolly, merry & festive. Christmas is hands down the best time of year. The streets are filled with sparkling fairy lights, kids are full of laughter & Mum’s and Dad’s are getting ready for a visit from good old Father Christmas. Christmas can be such a busy time of year, but one that we should still take time to fit in 10 mins of down time. A perfect activity for those times is reading books. And what better than a classic Christmas story.
Our top five picks are below:
How the Grinch Stole Christmas! by Theodor "Dr. Seuss" Geisel. It follows the Grinch, a grouchy, solitary creature who attempts to put an end to Christmas by stealing Christmas-themed items from the homes of the nearby town Whoville on Christmas Eve.
The Polar Express written and illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg. A young boy, who used to adore Christmas, hears a train whistle roar. To his astonishment, he finds the train is waiting for him. The train is called the Polar Express, and is journeying to the North Pole. The boy then boards the train, which is filled with chocolate and candy, as well as many other children in their pajamas.
"A Visit from St. Nicholas", more commonly known as "The Night Before Christmas" and "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" by Clement Clarke Moore. On Christmas Eve night, while his wife and children sleep, a father awakens to noises outside his house. Looking out the window, he sees Santa Claus (Saint Nicholas) in an air-borne sleigh pulled by eight reindeer. After landing his sleigh on the roof, the saint enters the house through the chimney, carrying a sack of toys with him.
Bear stays up for Christmas by Karma Wilson.
Bear's friends are determined to keep Bear awake for Christmas! So they wake Bear up and have him help them find a Christmas tree, bake cakes, hang up stockings, and sing Christmas songs. Bear stays up by discovering that giving is one of the best Christmas presents!
Pig the Elf by Aaron Blabey
No one loves Christmas more than Pig. And the world's greediest Pug will stay up all night to get his presents!
